Parents Panel: What do your kids eat for breakfast on a typical day?

‘Getting my three-year-old to eat any form of breakfast is a battle in itself.’

AS PART OF TheJournal.ie’s weekly Family Magazine, we wanted to create a space for parents to share their views. A place where mums and dads could share their experiences, lessons learned, and even mistakes along the way.

This week, we asked our panel to tell us about busy mornings in their house, and which morning meal works without fail.

What do your kids eat for breakfast on a typical day?

Here’s what they had to say…

Cheerios, if we can distract him from his trucks: Charlie loves toast and a handful of Cheerios in the morning. He’s less interested in eating his porridge these days and more into sitting at the counter, playing with his trucks and eating some easy finger food. He also loves boiled egg – so long as it’s somebody else’s!

Avocado toast, for one of them anyway: My kids each eat totally different things. Rhiannon loves porridge, she usually makes it herself and has a little maple syrup on top. Malachi and Brendan are cereal kids, they have buckwheat flakes and I throw a handful of raisins on top. Rosie will have toast with a variety of different toppings, depending on her mood – at the moment she loves salami and avocado. On the weekends I usually do a big fry up, it’s a firm favorite for my husband, and the kids love it too.

- Susannah O’Brien

Speedy cereal: Cereal is our go-to family breakfast, either with or without fruit. We have plenty of choice in the house, which can hamper the decision process. We try to discourage hot breakfasts on school days as it just slows us down getting out of the house.

Weetabix on weekdays: Clíodhna (age one) starts every creche day loving her bowl of Weetabix. Weekends, we take our time and have breakfast together; french toast or pancakes with some fruit always go down well.

Toast with chocolate spread… when all else fails: Getting my three-year-old to eat any form of breakfast is a battle in itself. I have a cupboard full of different types of cereals – I once even tried putting Weetabix into a Disney cereal box –  but when she wakes up all she wants is her milk. Eventually she’ll usually eat something like fruit, yoghurt or pancakes – or toast with chocolate spread when all else fails.

- Denise Cumiskey

A fry if we’re all together: Schedules mean it’s a rare thing that we all get to have breakfast at the same time. They boys will have cereal or toast, while my wife Karen generally goes for something healthy. I tend not to eat breakfast, but when we do get the opportunity nothing beats the full Irish fry or homemade breakfast rolls.

Polish pancakes as a weekend treat (and Polish sausages too): Porridge with blueberries and raspberries is our usual weekday breakfast. At the weekends, there’s more variety: Tymek might have Polish pancakes with apples, croissants with plum confiture, or sausages (either Polish or Irish!) and waffles with huge amounts of ketchup.

- Marta Lisiecka

Toast, yoghurt and a banana: We’re quite traditional when it comes comes to breakfast. During the week it’s normally cereal or toast, a yogurt drink and a banana. At weekends, I’ll often have our son help me make pancakes, which we all love – or eggs, rashers and sausages if we need fuel for the day.

- Olly Keegan

Two or three servings on weekends: On weekdays they’ll have Weetabix and a glass of warm milk. On weekends, breakfast might have two or three rounds, with Cheerios and toast. We try to keep things as healthy as we can.

- Alan Dooley
